The Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund II (HEERF II) and the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund III (HEERF III) were authorized by the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2021 (CRRSAA) (signed into law on Dec. 27, 2020) and the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (ARP) (signed into law on March 11, 2021), respectively.
Background
MIT was awarded $8,955,163 in HEERF II and HEERF III funding. In accordance with the HEERF program requirements, all of these funds will be used to distribute financial aid grants to students. This total is made up of two portions. HEERF II is equal to $2,522,694 and HEERF III is equal to $6,432,469. In accordance with the HEERF program requirements, all $8,955,163 will be used to distribute financial aid grants to MIT students.
These funds can be used by students for any component of their cost of attendance (except those already covered by financial aid) or for emergency costs that arise due to the COVID-19 pandemic, such as tuition, food, utilities, housing, technology needs, health care (including mental health care), childcare, and other COVID-19-related emergency expenses. In distributing these funds, MIT must prioritize students with exceptional financial need.
In addition, Provost Martin A. Schmidt is working with School/College Deans to fund extensions for PhD students delayed by COVID-19.
