Dear Students,

On behalf of the entire Chancellor’s Office, welcome to MIT!

The three of us work together to provide all graduate students with meaningful student life and learning experiences. We strive to support the “whole student” — a term we use to encompass academics, community, campus life, well-being, and more.

There are, in fact, hundreds of colleagues throughout the Chancellor’s Office, Office of the Vice Chancellor, and Division of Student Life who, like us, come to work every day to help you grow and thrive academically and personally, inside and outside of our classrooms and labs. We also partner and collaborate with faculty and staff in more than 100 different graduate programs across MIT.

For the next few years, the Institute will serve as your new home (and for those of you with partners or families, their home, as well). We encourage you to find activities, affinity groups, and clubs that resonate with your interests; to learn from your peers; and to become familiar with MIT’s many support resources, from wellness to financial assistance.

Despite the challenges of managing the pandemic these past two-plus years, we’ve been able to move key priorities forward. For example, the Institute has invested in core needs, including increased financial support for all graduate students and improving student and campus life.

We’ve also made progress on major efforts like the Strategic Plan for Graduate Advising and Mentoring; the graduate student professional development enhancements recommended by Task Force 2021; and the DEI Strategic Action Plan.

Like every institution, MIT will always have room for improvement, and that’s why we want to hear directly from you. Many of the recent enhancements in graduate student life — such as creating dedicated offices for student veterans and for students with families, bolstering our GradSupport team, and offering guaranteed transitional support — have been made possible by rewarding partnerships with students like you.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us or to the staff on our teams at any point during your MIT journey. And best wishes for the remainder of the summer!

Sincerely,

Melissa, Ian, and Suzy
