Increase to visiting student fee effective September 1, 2023

MIT Letterhead for Maria T. Zuber and Ian A. Waitz

Dear Deans and Assistant Deans,

We are reaching out to advise you that the monthly visiting student fee will be $625 (a 4.2% increase) effective September 1, 2023. The new fee will apply to visiting students who start on or after that date. It will also apply to existing visiting students who request a visit extension after September 1, 2023. The new fee reflects increases in the FY2024 rates for the MIT Student Health Insurance Plan premium and Student Life Fee, yet it is still less than the overall costs of hosting a visiting student, which are subsidized by the Institute.

We ask that you forward this information to the DLC heads, directors of administration and finance, HR leads, and principal investigators in your units.

The visiting student fee may be paid by the student, principal investigator, or DLC discretionary funds. The one-time administrative processing fee that is paid only by the host PI or host DLC’s discretionary funds remains unchanged at $1,000.

See the FAQ below for additional information. If you have any questions or concerns about visiting student fees, please contact vsrequest@mit.edu.

Sincerely,

Maria T. Zuber
Vice President for Research

Ian A. Waitz
Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate and Graduate Education

Common Questions/Background

Who are visiting students?

Applicants for visiting student status must be pursuing a degree at an institution of higher education other than MIT and have been invited by faculty in an MIT department, laboratory, or center to do research here.

What does the Visiting Student Fee cover?

Visiting students are subject to a monthly fee that includes registration, MIT’s Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP), and student life fees. The fee enables visiting students to conduct research, use our fitness facilities, participate in student life programming, and have access to care at MIT Medical. Full monthly fees are charged regardless of whether the student starts on the 1st or the 15th of the month. The total fee for the duration of their stay must be paid in full and in advance. Additional costs will be applied for those who wish to enroll family members in SHIP.

Are there any exemptions to the fee?

Yes.

  • Harvard/Wellesley students are exempt from all fees.
  • Visits of less than six weeks and Fulbright students are exempt from most fees, with the exception of the cost of the MIT Student Health Insurance Plan per calendar month.
  • Exceptions to the SHIP enrollment requirement may be made for students enrolled at universities and colleges in Massachusetts if they can provide documentation showing that they are enrolled in their home institution’s health insurance plan.

Where can I learn more about administration of visiting students?

Please refer to the Guide for DLC Administrators to the Visiting Student Program, or contact vsrequest@mit.edu.
