Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Diep (pronounced “Yip”) Luu (he/him) as the inaugural director of the new Institute Advising Center and associate dean in the Office of the Vice Chancellor (OVC).

In this newly created role, Diep will report to me and provide strategic direction, planning, and management in the launch of the Institute Advising Center, which will include the Office of the First Year (OFY), and provide broader input on all aspects of advising and mentoring for our undergraduate students.

Diep will work closely with faculty, department administrators, and other campus advisors across MIT to enhance student success. The goal is to ensure that all of our undergraduates are given what the chancellor calls the “whole student” experience and are well supported, both academically and personally, throughout their time at the Institute.

Diep comes to MIT with 15 years of experience in student advising and mentoring, most recently serving as director of Student Advising & Success at Babson College. As a first-generation college graduate from a low-income background, Diep has a passion for promoting undergraduate student success, and he is committed to promoting a diverse and inclusive community.

He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in psychology, with an emphasis in mathematics, and a human development minor, at the University of California at Davis a master’s degree in higher education and student affairs at the University of Connecticut; and his PhD in educational policy & leadership: higher education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

His research interests include college access, equity and transition, and student success among students from refugee backgrounds and minoritized students in higher education. His dissertation integrated a community-cultural-wealth theoretical framework, narrative inquiry research methods, and over a decade of professional experience helping students succeed.

Originally from Vietnam, Diep and his family resettled in Los Angeles as refugees. Diep lives with his husband in Quincy, MA. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his husband, going to the beach, running/walking, gardening, being outdoors, streaming videos, listening to jazz, and traveling.

Please join me in welcoming Diep to OVC. His start date will be January 1, 2023 and his office (initially) will be located in 5-118.

Sincerely,
Ian
