Designing the First Year at MIT

Engage with the First Year

We welcome members of the MIT community to share feedback (privately) and ideas related to the first year experience.

Over the course of the last year we have gotten input and feedback from more than 150 faculty and hundreds of other community members, including students, staff, and alumni, which has significantly shaped our work.

We continue to want to hear your feedback about the current experiments as well as future ones (such as with the class of 2023).

Ideas shared via this form may be shared with members of the community as part of efforts to improve the first year, but we will not share personally identifying information.

If you have specific questions, please get in touch directly: ovc-fye@mit.edu.

Upcoming and Past Events

DFY (IAP ’19): Fun-Sized IAP 2019!

DFY (IAP ’19): Fun-Sized (2.s974/2.s790) is a 3-unit follow-up to the original Designing the First-Year Experience at MIT class (Spring ’18) offered in Spring 2018. The class will focus on exploring ideas for radical changes to the first-year experience that could be piloted with a small group of students, for example in a First-Year Learning Community (FLC), as well as less dramatic changes that could be tested with the entire Class of 2023. It will be offered in IAP 2019 and will be co-taught by Professor Maria Yang and Vice Chancellor Ian Waitz. The class will be held from 2-5 pm every day for the last two weeks of IAP (1/22-2/1). Class participants are expected to attend every session.

Please fill out this form if you are considering taking the class or want information. This information will help us tailor the class to fit your interests and needs. If the class is over-subscribed, preference may be given to students who express interest.

Open Office Hours with Vice Chancellor Waitz on 10/29

The Vice Chancellor will host open office hours on 10/29 from 2-4pm in 7-131. This will be an opportunity for students to provide in-person feedback about the first-year experiment and related topics.

Undergraduate Association Forum on 10/4!

The Undergraduate Association will host an interactive forum for MIT students on October 4th, 7-9 PM, Room 56-154, to discuss the current experiment for the class of 2022, ideas for next year, and the purpose of higher education in the 21st-century.

Please attend and encourage others to do so. This is an opportunity to help shape education at MIT.
